I recently heard about Green Smoothies and was intrigued. Before I investigated I just assumed that they were smoothies that contained green vegetable juice and wasn't really all that excited at the prospect as I knew that juiced green vegetables are not always the tastiest of juices. I soon realised that a green smoothie meant green leaves such as spinach, kale, even different types of lettuce and not vegetables like broccoli and that they were to be blended from whole with fruits not juiced first. Get the balance right and the flavour of fruit will predominate and make a palatable, nutrient packed drink. The more I read the more sense it makes. Blending ruptures the cell walls of the plant giving your body fast access to the nutrients and keeping the fibre. I made one today just with a few things I had in the fridge, 1 pear, a few chunks of pineapple, some crushed ice and a handful of mixed spinach, watercress and rocket. It was a lovely shade of green and tasted wonderful, sweet but with a hidden tang. I bet a banana would have made it really creamy too. People are talking about the green smoothie revolution and I can now understand why. Making a smoothie is much easier, I find, than juicing. Maybe its my juicer but clean up is such a chore whereas its easy to clean a blender or smoothie maker.
